keepsakes of memory    sonya spilkin

Sonya Spilkin is an emerging Toronto-based artist, from Oakville, Ontario. She has earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Arts from the University of Ottawa, and is currently taking her Bachelor of Education at the University of Toronto. Spilkin works primarily in the mediums of painting and photography. Her art is conscious of the themes of memory, family, personal and collective histories, identity, death, and the connections of the past to the present. In the future, Spilkin plans to combine her love for the arts and education though working at an established arts institution, in addition to completing a Masters of Fine Arts.

Sonya has exhibited her work both in Ottawa and in Oakville. She was awarded the prestigious Jacklyn Fry award in 2008 and was honoured with the Suzanne Rivard Le Moyen Award in 2009. This recognition has led Sonya to be chosen for an exclusive internship at the Gardiner Museum which will take place in the spring.
